Addictions and Recovery

Addiction is a noun: the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance or activity.
E.g: “he committed the offence to finance his drug addiction” (what often comes to mind when we hear the word addiction)

“a slavish addiction to fashion”

I never knew addictions could be this serious in my country or have such terrible ramifications on families and society as a whole. When I started my internship at the lone psychiatric ward of our public hospital in Douala the economic capital of Cameroon, you can imagine my surprise when I seriously mean 2/3 of the male brought there had an addiction problem.

The objective of this page therefore, is to bring this ‘Taboo’ subject to light. Addictions are a huge sign of something wrong somewhere. They affect our mental health, or are sparked by an unidentified mental health problem.

I will eventually find and share relevant resources here, and will appreciate all guest posts related to addictions and advocacy, of course recovery tips and stories are most welcome.

In my country Cameroon, there is no mental health policy, leave out addictions even only drugs abuse, there is no national rehab centre or treatment protocols, forget about resources for social support like AA, NA, AL’ Annon etc

May long term goal is to found a huge centre for Mental Health Care support called The Zone, with different camps for different service users and providers. I leave that project in God’s Hands entirely and in His time, if it really be His Will, it shall come to be.
